DREAM——A word that has changed the world
Hello, everybody !it is my great honor to be here to share my idea with you .Today,I will talk something about DREAM——A word that has changed the world .
“What do you think is the word that has really changed our world ”
When I was asked about this question for the first time ,without thinking it too much ,a word flash into my mind ——DREAM ,D-R-E-A-M.People more or less dream about different things ,to be a teacher ,a doctor ,a scientist ,a businessman and so on .All these people who have dreams should be respected ,because Dreams make the world go around .We grow great by our dreams. All big men are great dreamers in their youth.Everyone has a dream ,and everything starts as one’s daydream.
Martin Luther king had a dream. He desired for a future where blacks and whites would coexist harmoniously as equals.By speaking the way he did,he educated,he inspired,he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations. He pushed forward the pace of American black society towards the racial equality .
Thomas Edison had a dream. He dreamed of a lamp that could be operated by electricity, began where he stood to put his dream into action, and despite more than ten thousand failures,he stood by that dream until he made it a physical reality! And today, his dream lights up the world at night.
Walt Disney had a dream. This,in itself, wasn't unusual -- he was always dreaming. He dreamed of making the first animated feature film, and of building an amusement park that parents could enjoy right along with their kids.Walt Disney empowered his dream and today,Disneyland,Disney world and Disney theme parks attract around the world thrill millions of visitors each and every year.
John F.kennedy had a dream. He wanted to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth so as to restore faith in the American way of life.John F.kennedy empowered his dream and 8 years later Neil Armstrong stepped on the face of the moon. The moon landing certainly gave Americans new found confidence.
Dream --- A word that has changed the world Yes ,I would say so ,wouldn’t you
Youth is a special life relay station ,the growth with the worry ,the life feeling become aware happily with the dream ,collected a unique youth melody in here .
We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose,so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. And most importantly ,You are the one you choose to be.
It is easy to waste our lives ,our days ,our minutes .It is easy to exist than living .So hold fast to your dreams,For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird,That cannot fly.Hold fast to your dreams,For when dreams go,life is a barren field,Frozen with snow.
I hope you everyone he
NO IMAGINATION, NO CREATIVITY
Dear teachers and students:
Good morning / afternoon / evening! My name is Liu zi yuan. The title of my speech is the relationship between creativity and imagination.
There is no creativity without imagination. With the development of the society, creativity becomes more and more important. People could not satisfy with ordinary life. So we need creativity to meet their requirements. We can see significance of the creativity from an example. The smart phone—iphone spread all over the world. That was the creativity of The Apple Inc. It is obvious that it will produce a bigger profit than common manufacturing. But, hao can we acquire creativity?
I think the creativity roots in imagination. Albert Einstein said that imagination is important than knowledge. Because we should creative a thing that is never appeared, we need to image. Use all the things and information around us to think and then go to achieve it. Without the imagination of the Wright brothers , human could not complete the flying dreams. Without the imagination of the Alexander Graham Bell, we could not hear the voice from a distance. If the creativity can make the human progress, imagination will be the road to success. Where the imagination come from? Knowledge ? Experience ? practice? I consider that all of them are indispensable. It is often said that knowledge is power. So we should empower ourselves with knowledge. After that we need to obtain experience form. practice. These are the basis, and we must strengthen them to extend our imagination.
As contemporary college students, we must shoulder the responsibility of the future of our motherland. What we need is not only the knowledge of the past, but also is the innovation of a new field. Our thought can not be bound by the old things. We should understand that an excellent nation is always full of creativity. So we must promote our imagination. There is no creativity without imagination. That’s all, thank you!

We are in a constant state of trying to get something better and different. We are often trying to be someone different, even when the current us is pretty decent. If you are not happy being you, then who else can you be? In each person's life, will meet a lot of individual who will impacted themselves. Some people teach you a lot of things. Some may give you a lot of encouragement As for me there are also some people inspired me.But the most great impact was my dear father.
When I was a little girl,I often want to give up study instead play games. Then my father will told me “Perseverance is the golden key to being successful in anything you do.It's a matter of hanging on long afte others have quit”.When I was a teenager I like to make track for a star, and like images like, including dress etc. Then my Dad always tell me that“Be what you are, not what you aren't,because when you are what you aren't,then you aren't what you are”.All of the things are inspired me so much.
Sometimes,I think my father was a philosopher, sometimes think he is a activists, always set an example for his child ,do what a father should do.He is always working hard to feed large family, he is always considerate to forgive his naughty children, moreover he filial piety to the old person,to repay parents' brought up. In a word, he always so good.
Of course he's not a iron man,he also has a fragile, but he never lose self, and perseverance. What's more, when I meet with some troubles and want to give up, he always encourage me.I still remember what he told me “perseverance overcomes almost everything. When you fall, perseverance tells you get up.When you are defeated, perseverance tells you to try again .When you feel like quitting, perseverance doesn't let you”.
Nowadays, I am an adults, and as a college student,I always unavoidably depending on my father, I often call to my father to ask some questions, meanwhile I also want to know how are they recently I start my college life followed with my fathers edification.Because of my dear father,I know how important to be myself.I have to be true to myself, because the only important thing in life is what you do with the time on spend here in earth. So I'll always be optimistic and happy in the following time. Also,as my father told me,just be perseverance to do everything. So that I can do anything I wish to create my future!
Father is like a lighthouse, guide me in the direction of the future.I hope I could owning a wonderful future, and my father will company with me forever!thanks!篇二Dear friends:
If you can dream it, you can do it.——Walt Disney
It was a long four years. Even after I had actually graduated, the nightmares began to haunt me, the university would call to say I hadn’t truly graduated. There had been a mistake and there was just one more class I needed to take. I was always so relieved to wake up and realize that it had only been a bad dream. In reality, I had completed every course needed for my degree, and I was a full-fledged college graduate!
Now, the rest of my life loomed ahead of me. Sometimes a bachelor’s degree prepares you for a specific occupation——you train to be an accountant, you graduate and get a position in an accounting firm. Often, however, your stint in college only prepares you to make further decisions regarding your future. You’re pretty sure what you don’t want to do!
During my senior year of college, I had toyed with the idea of changing my major. At that point, I had finally discovered what captured my heart. But, wanting to finally be finishing school was a stronger pull. So, I took a few courses in physiology and exercise science, but not enough to receive a degree in physical therapy. That would require advanced schooling, beyond my bachelor’s degree——and I just wasn’tready to tackle that. Having completed my B.C. degree, I didn’t have any intentions of furthering my education.
So, I did the safe thing and got an office job——the very thing I was sure that I didn’t want to do! I detested the office policies, the suits I had to wear and the downtown environment that I had to drive to every day. I knew this was not where I belonged.
But god knew what path my career was to follow. A position opened up at the most exclusive health club in our city, so I applied. This was my kind of environment——an active, vibrant kind of place——completely at the opposite end of the spectrum from the office environment where I found myself. The position required that I work Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Perfect, I thought! I could keep my office job Monday through Friday and work at my dream job on the weekends. This arrangement lasted several months until, eventually, a full-time position opened up and I was able to resign from my office job.
Over the next few years, I worked my way up the leader, gaining experience in several different departments. I found my niche as the director of member services——catering to our clientele and providing them with numerous cutting-edge programs. I would have stayed at that job forever——it seemed to be the pinnacle of all my dreams fulfilled. Here were fellow employees who had a passion for the same things that I did——health and fitness. Yet again, god had other plans for my life.Within two years, a newer, bigger, better and more state-of-the-art health club facility was built——just five miles down the road. And, in turn, the owner lost many members to that club. And, in turn, the owner lost thousands of dollars. One by one we were each laid off.
After trying unsuccessfully to land another similar position elsewhere, I knew what I had to do. Go back to school!thanks!篇三The story with English and me
Hello everyone,it is glad to meet you,my name is Nong Yanxing, you can also call me Virita, It’s my English name. I am a Howell School’s girl and I am an outgoing girl too, so I like playing jokes with others.
I am fourteen years old and I have learnt English for six years now I’ve loved English since the first time, I’ve heard it from a tape. The voice from the tape was very wonderful and the language was so nice .That time I thought, how wonderful the language is! And if I can speak English as well as the speaker in the tape, that will be amazing! So I asked my mum:“Can I learn English? I really love it!” “Of course you can,but are you sure about it? Can you insist on it?” She was a bit excited. “Of course I can, mum. I love it very much,I want to learn it. ”I said confidently,“Oh,my good kid,you are very good,I am so excited about you are interested in English. ”She gave me a sweet hug. We laughed together. Then,I’ve started my English learning way.
At the beginning,I loved English because it sounds comfortable ,but I can’t believe that how difficult to learn English grammar. Then I felt tired, and I really want to give it up. Buton that main time,my English teacher found me was a bit strange,“What wrong with you,Virita? You look a bit strange.” “Nothing, I just think English grammar is so difficult. It is boring,I don’t want to learn it anymore!” “Why?You can’t give it up,Virita. I can help you just trust me.”“Really?” “Of course!” Then she helped me with my English grammar after class everyday. She told me how to find a good way for my own to learn English grammar. How to find a good way to remember the English new words. She told me try to love English! Interests is the best teacher! So my English marks improve very fast. And in the finally exam,I got the best marks at school. I was so happy .But my English teacher warned me again “Don’t be proud of it. Hasty climbers have the sudden falls. You should come on!”
I also like watching Holly Wood movies, for example, The Green Man in the Avengers is very strong and V in V of vendetta is very cool. Most of actors and actresses speak English in the film, and I really want to understand the whole meaning about a film without any caption one day. Itis difficult for me to make it come true. I should work harder.
English is a very beautiful language .And itis my friend,a real friend. Although I can’t feel it with my hands, but I can feel it with my heart. English brought me a lot and I have a big dream about English. To make it come true ,I should work harder and learn more Western culture. We’ll love each other more and more.
This is the story with English and me.
Thanks for listening.
Long long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl.
She was very sad. Because her mother had died and her father had married again. His new wife had two ugly daughters, Esmerelda and Griselda
Soon after, her father also died and life immediately(立即) changed for the girl.
“You will be our servant(仆人), ”said her stepmother(繼母). “You will do everything we say.”
“You must sleep in the kitchens.” said the stepsisters.
There she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak(黎明), carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash. Besides(除了) this, the sisters did everything imaginable(可以想象) to hurt her. They made fun of her. In the evening when she had worked herself weary(厭倦), there was no bed for her. Instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes(灰). And because she always looked dusty(塵土飛揚) and dirty, they called her Cinderella.
“There are cinders(煤渣) all over your clothes!” exclaimed(喊叫) the stepmother. “ Cinderella. Thats your new name. Clear these things away, Cinderella.”
“Cinderella! Cinderella!” Esmerelda and Griselda said. “Oh, how clever you are, Mama!”
One day, an invitation(邀請) arrived from the palace.
“Girls, listen to this,” said the stepmother. Cinderella was serving(準備) the breakfast. She listened as her stepmother read the invitation.
“The King is having a ball,” she said excitedly(興奮). “He is looking for a wife for the Prince! Oh, my dears, this is wonderful. He will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make.
”Am I invited too, stepmother?“ asked Cinderella.
”You! Certainly(當然) not!“ exclaimed(驚呼) her stepmother. ”The thought of such a thing. A scruffy servant(破舊的仆人) going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!“
”Hah! Hah!“ laughed the stepsisters. ”Beautiful! That doesnt include you, Cinderella!“
”You may help my two lovely girls to get ready,“ said her stepmother.
”Oh,“ said Cinderella
”We shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today. Clear away these things, Cinderella.“
Oh, I wish I could go to the ball, thought(認為) Cinderella.
The day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing Esmerelda and Griselda. Cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task.
Finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother.
Cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens.
”Oh, I did so want to go,“ she sighed(嘆氣) as she sat down by the fire.
”Whats to stop you?“ asked a voice(聲音).
”Whos that?“ asked Cinderella, looking around.
”Im here by the door.“ A strange woman walked up to Cinderella. ”I heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball. Well, the ball is this evening, and youre going.“
”But how?“ asked Cinderella. ”What can you do?“
”Anything I want to,“ said the woman. ”Im your fairy(仙女) godmother, and Im here to send you to the ball.
She sat down.
“Come now,” she said. “Dry those tears(擦干眼淚). We have work to do. I need a large pumpkin(南瓜), two mice(老鼠) and a frog. Can you find these?”
“Yes,” said Cinderella, mystified(迷惑) by the request(請求).
“Off you go, then.”
When Cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside.
“Now for the magic,” she said. She waved(揮舞) her hands and the air began to twinkle(閃爍) and sparkle(閃光). The pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a coach.
The mice changed into two fine footmen(步兵), the frog into the driver, and the rats(老鼠) into two beautiful horses to pull the coach.
Cinderella clapped(拍) her hands. “Its beautiful!” she cried.
“In you get,” said her fairy godmother.
“But I cant go like this,” said Cinderella.
“Like what?” asked the fairy godmother. “You look lovely to me.”
Cinderella looked at herself. While the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her. Instead of her ragged(破爛) dress she wore a beautiful ball gown(晚禮服), with glass slippers(玻璃鞋) on her feet.
“Oh, fairy godmother,” said Cinderella. “Its lovely. How can I thank you?”
“By going to the ball,” said the fairy godmother. “Off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight(午夜). Everything will change back then. Now go and enjoy yourself.”
“Good-bye, fairy godmother,” called Cinderella, as the coach swept off.
Cinderella arrived at the palace(皇宮) and walked into the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared(看著).
“Who is she?” people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters.
The Prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening. Cinderella danced only with the Prince(王子), and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her.
A clock chiming(報時) reminded Cinderella of her fairy godmothers warning(警告). It must be eleven oclock, she thought(告知), but she asked the Prince. “What time is it?”
“Almost midnight,” he answered.
“Oh, no!” cried Cinderella. “I must go!”
“You cant. Not now,” said the Prince.
“I must.” And Cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. As she ran, the clock finished chiming. Cinderellas clothes changed back into rags(破布), and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen.
The Prince tried to follow, but he couldnt catch up. When he reached(走到) the door, all he found was one glass slipper. He ran to the main door.
“Was a beautiful girl just driven(趕) out of here?” he asked the guard(士兵).
“No, your Highness. Ive only seen a scruffy servant(邋遢的仆人) girl,” the guard answered.
“Ive lost her,” said the Prince, and he returned sadly to the palace.
The next morning, Cinderellas stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball.
The Prince meanwhile(同時) decided to look for the mysterious(神秘) girl he had fallen in love with. He issued(發表) a proclamation(公告). “Whoever the glass shoe fits(合適), shall be wife to the Prince.”
The Prince and his footman(仆人) went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball.
He finally arrived at the stepmothers house.
“Its my shoe!” cried Esmerelda, trying desperately(穿) to pull the shoe on.
“Please, miss!” said the footman. “Your foot is too big. you will break the slipper(玻璃鞋).”
Griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long.
“Is there anyone else?” asked the Prince.
“Theres only Cinderella, the maid(女仆),” said the stepmother. “But she wasnt even at the ball.”
“All the ladies in the kingdom(王國) must try the slipper,” said the footman.
Cinderella was called from the kitchen. Esmerelda and Griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was. But their laughter turned to tears when they saw Cinderellas foot slide easily into the slipper.
“Oh!” they cried. “It fits!”
The Prince looked at Cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with.
Cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket(口袋) and put it on.
The Prince was happy to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and Cinderella were married. They lived happily ever after.
Griselda

A Small Truth to Make Life 100%
Karamay Experimental Middle School Luo Jintao
Good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
I’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. I hope we all can enjoy the time. Now, today my topic is: A Small Truth to Make Life 100%.
As a young English teacher, I have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. Life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and I feel very tired. How to make my life become better? I’m always seeking for the answer. Fortunately, when I read a magazine one day, I found the truth to make my life 100%. Today I would like to share it with you.
Now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! As we all know, there are 26 alphabets in English, A to Z. Against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. If A is equal to 1%, and B to 2%, and so on, until Z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? That is to say, what can make our life perfect?
Some of you may suggest Money. However, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. Now try a few more. Knowledge? Yes, knowledge is power! But this time it only comes to 96%. How about love? That only shows at 54%. Luck does even worse, only at 47%. Though most of us think this is the most important.

Building Bridges for the Future
I’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls。 People who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks。 The old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries。
Our ancestors liked to build walls。 They built walls in Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes across half our country。 They built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits。 This tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public。
For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me。
My perceptions, however, changed after I made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city。 My classmates and I were walking with some foreign students。 As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads。 Suddenly one foreign student asked me, “Where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”
“We’re already in the eastern suburbs,” I replied。 He seemed taken aback, “I thought you Chinese had walls for everything。” His remark set off a heated debate。 At one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while I insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls。
That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this student。 For instance, he told me that some major universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls。 I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible。 We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development。
Let me give another example。
A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library。 However, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, “You can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here。” In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy。 Meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf。
At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my experience wouldn’t be repeated。 Barriers would be replaced by bridges。 An inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library。 With globalization and China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down。
I know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad。 But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their role in the modern world。
And how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? Should we tear them down? Definitely not。 My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually XXX a great effort to preserve the walls。 These walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage。 Walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world。 If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls。 They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world。 Our cultural heritage will survive globalization。

what is real beauty?
yang lingyuan
it is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty. everybody was born with a heart for beauty.
today in china, with the rising of our living standard, people's requirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. some people spare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hair styles, the decoration of their houses and even the improvement of their looks. but it seems to me,all
these are more or less confined to the beauty in appearance,or rather, the outward beauty.
in my opinion,we shouldn't only pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what we are after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and the inner beauty. as we all know,so far as objects and animals are concerned, there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, but to us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is much more important. this was confirmed by a famous russian writer in words much like this: “a person is
not lovely for being beautiful but beautiful for being lovely. ”
here, i'd like to quote two typical instances and i'm sure, my dear friends, from them you'll find out what real beauty is.
recently i learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about a well known singer. she is very charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very famous for singing the song.“devotion of love”. not long ago,she was invited to zhejiang province to give performance. the moment she was to appear on the stage, she suddenly asked for more reward. worse still, after her request was satisfied, she didn't begin to sing at once. instead, she took her time to count all the money piece by piece. thus she kept the audience waiting for half an hour. so when she at last showed up and started to sing “devotion of love”,a man rose up from his seat and shouted at her,“you don't have any devotion of love. you are not qualified to sing this song ! ”hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. at this time the whole audience burst into an uproar.
how disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! it is the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyes of others.
now, i'm coming to another true story. it's about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. she was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. however, she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. every day she labored from morning till night. in order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school, she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. she got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.

Good evening, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen! I’m very glad for being here on this beautiful Friday evening to share my thoughts with all of you on the topic of“make a change”. First of all,I really want to ask two questions: What is change, how to make a change.
Change is what keeps us fresh, change is what keeps us young, change is what keeps us from getting stale and stuck in a rut. I’d like to share a famous saying of Gandhi with all of you, what is, if you want to change the world, then you must change yourself first. Actually, we cannot change the past, but we can change the present, we cannot change the fact, but we can change our manner, we cannot change the weather, but we can change our mood, we cannot change life’s length, but we can change life’s width. Never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. If you don’t like the taste of your life, just change the ingredients.
Time files! Only once can we live. If you don’t want to leave any regret. Let’s start right now to make a change. We must realize that it is never too late to begin making changes that can change our life. The moral to it is to change what you see and don’t like. Don’t just sit there and think of how sad the place is. Make a change for the better. Don’t wait for the right time. There isn’t one. There is never a perfect time.Just time. Today always beats tomorrow. Today is the only day we have. Tomorrow is only a promise and may never come. Dream for tomorrow but live for today. Make your changes and do it now. Life makes no guarantees as to what you’ll have. It just give you time to make changes, and to take chances, and to discover what secrets might come your way. It is an honor to stand here and have this chance to say that we are the ones who can make a change and let a brighter day come.
That’s all.Thanks for your time!

Thanks,contestant#18.The topic for your impromptu speech is:Which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal experience? Answer: Thank you.
I remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,“From now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.The key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books.”And I do learn a lot from books: I know the geometry of Euclid, logic of
Aristotle, fable of Aesop known to children around the world. Well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, I do realize that personal experience through practice means more to me. As we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around.
As we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and I think this is why we are here today. We want to earn our personal experience through practicing our oral English, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here.
And I think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. Never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises.
And never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. And I think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams.
Even if we know some rules, some regulations, or experiences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world. Instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. Thank you very much. Contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. Could you explain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?

To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening that I found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the 21st Century·Ericsson Cup Seventh National English Speaking Competition is a memory that I shall treasure and one that will surely stay.
More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued.
For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try. In the course of preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.
I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.
At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.
Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.
In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?
Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.
Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?
I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for my appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response. In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.
Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some were able to, but did not know where to stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. Or they were thinking of what they had prepared.
As I said in my speech, It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. We need to respond honestly.
A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking. Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. And this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.
And the following is the final version of my speech:
GLOBALIZATION:
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
FOR CHINAS YOUNGER GENERATION

a small truth to make life 100%
karamay experimental middle school luo jintao
good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
i’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. i hope we all can enjoy the time. now, today my topic is: “a small truth to make life 100%”.
as a young english teacher, i have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and i feel very tired. how to make my life become better? i’m always seeking for the answer. fortunately, when i read a magazine one day, i found the truth to make my life 100%. today i would like to share it with you.
now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! as we all know, there are 26 alphabets in english, a to z. against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. if a is equal to 1%, and b to 2%, and so on, until z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? that is to say, what can make our life perfect?
some of you may suggest “money”. however, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. now try a few more. knowledge? yes, knowledge is power! but this time it only comes to 96%. how about love? that only shows at 54%. luck does even worse, only at 47%. though most of us think this is the most important.
then what makes 100%? hard work? closer, 98%. but not exact. now, what on earth can make life 100%? well, every problem has a solution, only if we perhaps change our attitude. yes! only attitude comes out at 100%.
many of the gifts we have been given have been distributed unfairly. we all wish we had the ability of the talented, the money of the rich, and the luck of the beautiful. but none of these matter. there is only one thing we all have equally and can always control even in the worst situations. and that is our attitude.
life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. therefore, attitude is the thing that shapes who you are the most.
attitude is everything. now, my dear friends, please give the world a sunshine smile. change your attitude and enjoy every minute in your life.
that’s all. thank you!

In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat forsupper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. at certain times in ourlives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school toattend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife. yes, life is amatter of choice. seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. but inessence, it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived, savored, andenjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.
Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat fromthe life-and-death disease--sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, someafflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and somecreative people dubbed sars to mean “smile and remain smiling.” i was deeplytouched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in theirminds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.
Laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economicadvancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought onthem. but, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard torebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstratingtheir values.
Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoidunexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to liveoptimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approachlife that day. as for me, i choose to be cheerful.

My Attitude towards to Marks
For our students, marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us from ourmarks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks, wecan be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled intocollege. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies.Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for furtherstudies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our society judge usfrom marks. However, sometimes we students compare one another with marksdirectly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel sorryfor them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?
Truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in ourstudy, marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say “Everyone is equalbefore marks. ”
However, I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failureof students in exams. Sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two inour exams comparing with others mean not everything. The success or failure inexams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’s healthetc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. “ Success or failure is commonsense for military. ” I think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. Don’tyou think such will be the case with our study? In exams, one cannot be “never-defeated general” . Even though one will be very good in everyday study,he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof from the fact thatthe very best one we call “Number One Scholar” in the entrance exams for collegeand ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years isnot eminent above all others nor top student in every study.
As a matter of fact, “high marks” and “ability” are not unified. Some timeago, a new phrase “ high marks but poor competence” came into being. Once Ihappened to meet such a teacher as this .It is said that the teacher justgraduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much lessthan that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. Whenlecturing, the teacher only repeated what the text-books says, which was verydull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching wasshort of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we knowa few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. Thereason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from bookswith pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in everyexam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don’tyou think it waste training such persons for the country?
To sum up from the above, I can say marks are not absolutely authoritativefor some. If we neglect training and developing the students’ ability andcompetence and if we only seek for the high marks, we will be absolutely wrong. We should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should weneglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.
